We're here to help. Most answers are below. If you can't find yours, send us a message.

Please don't include medication names or health details in your message. We don't need them to help you.

Pill Caller is not an emergency service. If someone may be in danger, call 911.

Stop the calls

If you receive reminder calls and want them to stop

You can do either of these at any time. Both are free.

1

Call our opt-out line: (779) 216-3016. Call from the phone that gets the reminders, then press 1. This stops every reminder call to that phone right away, from every account, and we tell the person who set up the calls. They can't restart the calls on their own. Only you can agree to calls again.

2

Press 9 during a reminder call. This asks your caregiver to stop the calls. We tell them right away by text and in the app. The calls continue until they respond, so for an immediate stop, use the opt-out line.

You can also just press 2 on the first call we ever make to you (the call that asks whether you want reminders). If you press 2, you won't get reminder calls.

If you set up the calls and want to pause or stop them

Open the app, choose the person, and pause their calls. You can resume them later. To remove the person and their information completely, see Deleting data.

Getting started

What is Pill Caller?

Pill Caller places automated phone calls to someone you care for, reminding them about medications, appointments or daily tasks. You set up the reminders in the iPhone app. The person gets an ordinary phone call, so they don't need a smartphone or an app. When they've done the reminder, they press 1.

How do I set up reminders for someone?
  1. Download the Pill Caller app and create an account.
  2. Add the person, with their phone number and time zone.
  3. Verify their phone number with the 6-digit code we text to it.
  4. Complete the consent steps (see below).
  5. Add their medications or reminders and the times they should be called.
  6. Review and approve the call script. Calls can't start until you've approved it.
Why does the person need to answer a consent call?

We only call people who have agreed to be called. Before any reminders start, we make one short call to the person. It says who we are, who set up the calls, and how often and when calls may come. They press 1 to agree or 2 to decline.

If the person can't give consent themselves, a representative with legal authority, such as a health care power of attorney or a guardian, also needs to confirm that in the app. The person still receives the consent call.

I didn't get the verification code.

Check that the phone number is correct and can receive texts. You can request a new code after 30 seconds. Codes expire after 10 minutes. After 5 wrong tries, wait a little while before trying again. If you change the phone number, you'll need to verify the new one.

The consent call was missed or declined. What now?

You can place the consent call again from the app. If the person pressed 2, respect that decision. We'll let you know in the app that they declined.

About the calls

What does a reminder call sound like?

A friendly automated voice reads the reminder you approved, in one of four voices you choose. It then asks the person to press 1 when they've completed the reminder, and repeats that request about every two minutes. A call lasts at most 8 minutes.

If you turn off keypad confirmation for a reminder, the call reads the reminder twice and then ends.

On Plus, you can record reminders in your own voice. The safety lines and the "press 1" request are still spoken.

When will calls come?

Only at the times you schedule, in the person's own time zone, and only within their allowed calling hours (8 AM to 8 PM by default, which you can change). Calls come from (656) 216-2423. It helps to save that number in the person's contacts as "Pill Caller".

What happens if nobody answers?

If you've turned on a follow-up for that reminder, we call once more 15, 30 or 60 minutes later. We never call more than twice for the same reminder. If the person presses 1 before then, the follow-up is cancelled.

Do you leave voicemails?

Only on the last call for a reminder. By default the voicemail is a short, general message that doesn't include the person's name, medications or health conditions. You can allow more detail in the app, or turn voicemails off.

What does pressing 1 mean?

It records that the person pressed 1 on the call. That's all it tells us. It doesn't confirm that a medication was taken, or taken correctly.

Where can I see what happened on a call?

Open the person in the app and choose Call history. Each call shows whether it was confirmed, answered, sent to voicemail, not answered, or not placed, and why. You can also be notified by text, push or email after each reminder. Those messages never include medication details.

A call wasn't placed. Why?

The usual reasons are:

  • the call script needs approving, or needs re-approving after a medication or reminder was changed
  • the person's daily call limit for your plan was reached (follow-ups count too)
  • the free trial ended or the subscription isn't active
  • the monthly usage cap was reached (see below)
  • the person asked to stop the calls, or phone verification or consent isn't complete

Call history in the app shows the exact reason for each call.

Plans and billing

How much does it cost?
PlanPricePeople includedCalls per person per day
Standard$19.99/month1up to 3
Plus$29.99/monthup to 3up to 6, plus custom voice recordings

On either plan, you can add more people for $15/month each (up to 5 more), with up to 3 calls a day each. Follow-up calls count toward the daily limit. Every call lasts at most 8 minutes. Prices are in US dollars. The App Store shows the price in your local currency.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Every new account gets a free 7-day trial of the plan you choose, covering the people that plan includes. You aren't charged for the trial. When it ends, calls stop until you subscribe. We remind you two days before it ends. Each phone number can only be part of one free trial. If you think we've made a mistake, you can ask for a review in the app.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are billed through Apple and renew monthly until you cancel. To cancel, go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions on your iPhone, or visit apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Calls continue until the end of the period you've paid for.

Deleting your Pill Caller account does not cancel your Apple subscription. Please cancel it in your Apple settings as well.

How do I get a refund?

Apple handles all payments, so refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

What is the monthly usage cap?

The phone-service costs of your account's calls in a calendar month can't exceed what your subscription costs per month. We'll let you know in the app when you reach 70% and 90% of the cap. If you reach it, reminder calls pause until the 1st of the next month. Typical use stays well below the cap.

I got a new phone. How do I get my subscription back?

Sign in, open Plans, and tap Restore purchases.

Caregivers and family

Can other family members help?

Yes. The account owner can invite caregivers by email from the Caregivers screen, and choose what each person can see and do for each person being called. The invite link expires after 7 days, and the owner can send a new one.

Who gets told when someone asks to stop the calls?

The account owner, plus any caregivers who have permission to receive alerts for that person. They're alerted in the app and by text, if they've verified a phone number for alerts.

Privacy and your data

How do I download my data?

In the app, open Settings, then Your data, and choose Export. The account owner can export the whole account. Caregivers can export their own data.

How do I delete a person, or my whole account?

In the app:

  • Remove a person: open the person and delete them. This permanently removes their information, medications, reminders, scripts, recordings and call history.
  • Delete your whole account: Settings → Your data → Delete account. This is permanent and can't be undone.

Deletion can't happen while a call to that person is in progress. Remember to cancel your Apple subscription separately. For a few limited records, such as billing amounts and the record that a phone number already had a free trial, we keep only what we need, never medication details.

Is medication information shared with AI?

The app can suggest wording for a call script, but it never sends the person's name, medication names, doses or reminder text to the AI. It only drafts wording around blanks, and your own entries are filled in exactly as you typed them. You review and approve every script before it's used.

What do texts, emails and notifications include?

Only that a reminder was completed or not, or that something needs your attention. They never include medication or reminder details.

See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Safety

Pill Caller is a reminder service. It is not a medical device, a substitute for advice from a doctor or pharmacist, or an emergency service.

  • Every medication call ends with: "If you are uncertain about what to take, do not guess. Contact your caregiver, pharmacist or clinician."
  • Always check medication details against the prescription label or with a pharmacist.
  • In an emergency, call 911.
